Workshop Description:
In this interactive workshop, we will explore the ways that several key concepts – white supremacy culture, the buffer zone, and the savior complex (particularly the white savior complex) – show up in the work of the mental health field and other types of care work. Each of these concepts will be introduced, including associated risks and patterns. We will apply these concepts to examples in large and small groups. We will also explore what frameworks, questions, tools, and interventions can support us to move towards solidarity. We’ll engage with lecture, discussion, creative reflection and somatic practice to explore these themes.
Our goal will be to gain new insights, resources, and commitments and to encourage reflection and action, both individually and within our institutions and systems. We welcome those who are not as familiar with these topics and those who have been grappling for a long time. We welcome mental health workers alongside those who are careworkers in our communities in many expressions.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to discuss at least 5 characteristics of white supremacy culture, as framed by Tema Okun, and explain how at least one characteristic might show up in their clinical work.
- Participants will be able to describe the savior complex and 6 risks/harms that can be perpetuated by the savior complex.
- Participants will be able to identify 8 aspects of solidarity and at least one question from “Developing a Reflective Practice” they want to continue exploring.
Educational Goals:
- Better understand the concepts of white supremacy culture and the savior complex and how these harmful dynamics, and the ways we have each been conditioned by and are complicit in them, can impact our work in the mental health profession.
- Increase capacity to recognize ways that power and privilege can play out and cause harm to clients and marginalized communities through white supremacy culture and the savior complex.
- Gain tools and frameworks to support reflection and action that can counteract the impacts of white supremacy culture and savior dynamics and build greater solidarity.
Target Audience:
- Psychologists, Counselors, Social Workers, Addictions Professionals, Marriage & Family Therapists, Psychotherapists, Case Managers, Other Mental Health Professionals, Care Workers and Helping Professionals of All Types
FAQ: I identify as a Person of Color. Is this training for me?
This workshop will focus a critical lens on harmful dynamics caused by whiteness, by white supremacy culture, and by the savior complex. All therapists, social workers and care workers are welcome to be a part of the conversation, regardless of racial identity, or other parts of your identity, even as we hold a primary focus on whiteness. While much effective work that addresses privilege and oppression happens in caucuses (identity groups), this workshop is not caucus work. We want to look deeply at the ways we are each conditioned and embedded in the system of white supremacy and saviorism and talk about how we develop tools to disrupt that system from where we are each positioned.
Course Format:
This is a live, interactive online course taught by two co-facilitators via Zoom. Participants are required to attend the live online workshop, participate in group discussion, and complete the course evaluation before earning the certificate of attendance.
Facilitators: Ari Tzvia Helfand and Toran Ailisheva
Ari and Toran go way back! They have been in political formation through White Noise Collective since 2014. This is their first collaboration in the therapist space after years as co-facilitators and friends.
Ari Tzvia Helfand, LMFT (they/them) is a somatic therapist, anti-imperialist organizer and mediator living on Lisjan Ohlone land in Oakland. They honor the complex ways their ancestors have carried culture and survived to make their life possible. They are a white, trans nonbinary, queer, disabled, Ashkenazi Jew raised on Dakhóta and Anishinaabeg lands in Minneapolis. They learned from their elders who survived the Nazi genocide that never again must mean never again for anyone. More information about Ari can be found at https://www.therapywithjaytzvia.space/about-3.
Toran Ailisheva, LMFT (they/them) identifies as a white, queer, nonbinary/trans artist and activist. They have a background in radical mental health, community mental health, union organizing, and community organizing and work currently as an expressive arts and somatic therapist, coach, and educator. They were a co-founder of, and currently organize with, Flying Over Walls, a Queer/Trans Prisoner Solidarity & Prison Abolition Project in the SF Bay Area, and were a core member and facilitator with the White Noise Collective from 2010 until its sunset in 2022. Through their leadership in both organizations over the past 15 years, they have been a part of developing curriculum on a variety of topics, centered in anti-racism, informed by principles of popular education, and with the goal of supporting collective movement toward a world free of white supremacy and other oppressive ideologies.
